BBM To Come Pre-installed On LG Smartphones

It took a long time for BlackBerry to figure out that to preserve its once iconic messaging service, it had to open BBM to other platforms. The company finally did this a few months back and the initial response was great, with over 20 million users signing up across iOS and Android in the first week alone.

The momentum might have slowed down since then, but BlackBerry remains committed to competing against behemoths like WhatsApp and Viber. It has scored another win, LG has agreed to pre-install BBM on its new smartphones in a variety of markets around the world.

The LG G Pro Lite will be the first smartphone from the Korean manufacturer to come with BBM straight out of the box. Andrew Bocking, EVP for BBM at BlackBerry said that the company is extremely pleased that LG is going to bring a seamless BBM experience to their customers with the G Pro Lite “in key markets.” He doesn’t go into detail about the markets where BBM will come pre-installed on LG smartphones. 

That said, BlackBerry reiterates its commitment to the messenger and says that it will continue to evolve for both iOS and Android in the coming months.

This isn’t the first OEM deal that BlackBerry has secured, it already has a similar arrangement in place with various OEMs that exclusively service markets such as India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East, where BlackBerry still holds its weight. (92)

WhatsApp Now Has 400 million+ Active Subscribers

Cross-platform messaging service WhatsApp has reached a milestone and now has 400 million subscribers. If you took each WhatsApp subscriber and had them stand on top of each other, it would measure all the way from earth to…well, let’s just say it would be a very long chain of humanity. The last 100 million was added in just the last 4 months. And this is a total of active members, not just those who registered and never used the service.

Consider that the company is thriving with only 50 employees working for the company. WhatsApp has reached the 400 million membership figure without a marketing campaign and has never spent 1 red cent on advertising.

Those 800 million eyeballs do have a value to advertisers. Back in April, well before the 400 millionth active user installed the app, there was a rumor that Google was going to buy WhatsApp for $1 billion. Yes, there is serious, serious money being thrown around here. And consider this. Once a user’s free year is up, WhatsApp costs 99 cents for each following year of service. It doesn’t take a genius to see the possibilities here. Of course, we can’t expect every member to keep the service beyond the free year. And who knows which messaging app the fickle public will be drawn to next.

Take Snapchat and its disappearing messages. As recently as June, the company raised money at a valuation of $800 million. Now, it has reportedly turned down a $3 billion offer from Google. That might be a decision that it regrets one day, because in tech you need to strike while the iron is hot. Right now, mobile eyeballs are worth a fortune and if you have a better mousetrap, you can attract those eyeballs and make a fortune.

Google Fined $1.23 million For Breaking Data Law in Spain

Technology giant Google has just been slapped with a $1.23 million fine (900,000 Euros) by Spain’s privacy watchdog, where they have been deemed to have broken Spain’s data protection law after merging personal information from its various online services while not informing in a clear and precise manner on how Google will be making use of such data.

Of course, $1.23 million is definitely a drop in the bucket for Google considering how they currently boast of a market capitalisation of more than $350 billion. Still, this does show how there are concerns across the Old World about the amount of personal data which is being held in foreign jurisdictions in what is better known as “cloud” storage services.

When it comes to cloud storage services, such data will be stored in a remote manner over the Internet, and not on-site, which means that individuals will have extremely little control when it comes to their personal information. In fact, it was just last month when the Dutch Data Protection Authority
held Google responsible for violating its data protection act. Even as you read this, there are investigations being held against Google in at least three other European countries.

The Spanish Agency for Data Protection mentioned in a statement, “Inspections have shown that Google compiles personal information through close to one hundred services and products it offers in Spain, without providing in many cases the adequate information about the data that is being gathered, why it is gathered and without obtaining the consent of the owners.” (77)

Facebook has offered $1billion to take over Snapchat

Reports reaching us indicates that Facebook has reportedly offered to acquire Snapchat. Facebook made an offer of one billion dollars on the popular photo-sharing app Snapchat, with this acquisition facebook hopes to capture a massive and lucrative teenage market.

According to Wall Street Journal Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel has turned down the offer. Facebook made a similar offer last year when the acquired Instagram by paying one billion dollars to acquire the photo App.But if Facebook succeeds in making these deal a success by taking over of snapchat, these will help increase Facebook's staying power in the mobile market as users who are tired of blogging about their lives in various social media networks instead prefer sharing photos through photo sharing Apps like Snapchat.
